Coates Blue in Tesco
Following a successful year during which we received a fantastic 38 awards for our many cheeses, a big achievement was to win a regional listing in Tesco for Coates Blue at the Tesco Cheese Challenge.
Coates Blue is a soft blue veined cheese made from equal quantities of goats and cows milk and matured for up to eight weeks. We make this cheese at our dairy by hand in small batches, producing 2.5kg rounds. As the cheese ages it forms a delicate creamy blue flavour and a silky texture that becomes slightly peppery with age.
Coates Blue is now available on the delicatessen in 100 North West Tesco stores.
Introducing Blacksticks Velvet
A brand new cheese that has been created from ewe’s milk, Blacksticks Velvet is to be launched in 25 Marks and Spencer stores for just a few weeks from 1 November.
This exciting new cheese is handmade in small batches at Butler’s farm near Beacon Fell in Lancashire, using British Friesland sheep’s milk sourced from neighbouring counties. The cheese is carefully matured for around six weeks, giving a rich creamy flavour and smooth silky texture.
We do hope that you enjoy our new Blacksticks Velvet, which we
hope to see available more widely as the supply of ewe’s milk becomes greater.
Win a gourmet break for two
In case you missed it on our home page, we have recently launched a promotion to win a gourmet break for two in Lancashire. Using our local contacts, we have put together an experience that money cannot buy, to include an overnight stop at the highly regarded Northcote Manor, the chance to try your hand at making real cheese and a unique opportunity to watch and cook in the kitchens of The Longridge Restaurant, one of Paul Heathcoate’s fine establishments.
Five runners up will also receive a lovely hamper packed with Lancashire specialities and plenty of Butlers cheese.
And all you have to do is enter! You do not need to purchase any of our cheeses, just click on the link below to be taken directly to the entry page.

Reducing our waste
We take our impact on the environment very seriously, and whenever possible, work to reduce it as much as is practical.
For this reason we questioned the need for the card sleeve on Blacksticks Blue. Whilst it certainly helps with the presentation in store, we are sure that it is the delicious cheese you are after, and so we have taken the decision to do away with it.
This action will eliminate approximately 11 tonnes of card a year, which we feel is an impressive move in the right direction!
Blacksticks Blue will however remain in the black container, and this is necessary to ensure that you receive your piece of Blacksticks in one piece. However this container is made from 50% recycled plastic and can actually be recycled if you have plastic recycling facilities near to you (call your local council to enquire about facilities – the more enquiries they get, the more likely they are to do something about it if they have not done already).
Signs for our farms
We are in the process of making some new signs for each of the farms that supply us with their milk. This will allow those travelling in the local area to see which farmers are helping us to make our lovely cheeses. So if you find yourself in our bit of Lancashire do keep your eyes peeled. With the furthest farm just 14 miles from Inglewhite Dairy, if you spot a sign you will know that you are firmly in
Blacksticks country!

New look same values
Whilst we have clearly had a great deal of fun creating our new website, we can assure you that it is the same old Butlers making your speciality cheese for you!
There is so much that we felt you should know about us, our family, our traditions and our values. We know you like our cheeses so we thought you might be interested.
And we haven’t finished yet! Our list of “things to do” on the website remains quite long so it would be well worth another visit. Do let us know what you think so far – you might even have an idea that we should be adding to our list…
And the winner is…
A rather wet Royal Bath & West Show did not deter us from adding three more successes to our long list of 167 cheese awards from the last four years.
Taking place from 28th to 31st May, there were simply hundreds of cheese entries as cheesemakers from all over Europe attempted to receive an award from what is regarded as one of the top annual British cheese competitions.
Butlers Creamy Lancashire Cheese was awarded first prize in class 13 whilst Butlers Tasty Lancashire Cheese also attained a gold in class 14. Third prize was given to Butlers Goulds Cheddar in class 5 bringing the final total of awards to three.
With more events to take place later in the year, Butlers continues to enjoy the prestigious title of award winning British speciality cheesemaker.
